The Cross of Nails is formed from three large nails. It commemorates the destruction of Coventry’s medieval cathedral during the Second World War. Following a heavy bombing raid by the German Luftwaffe, it was burnt down in November 1940.
Shortly afterwards, Provost Richard Howard wrote the words ‘FATHER FORGIVE’ on the choir wall of the ruins. He had a cross assembled from three large nails taken from the roof truss – the first Nail Cross. As a symbol of reconciliation and peace, replicas of this cross can now be found in Nail Cross centres all over the world.
Since 2018, St Mary’s Church has also been part of the Community of the Crucified Christ. Every Friday at noon, the Coventry Prayer for Reconciliation is held. It was written in 1959; you can find the German translation here.
Coventry became a vibrant centre for Christian reconciliation work. Its influence extends across the globe. Healing the wounds of history, standing up for justice and peace, and celebrating diversity: this is the message that emanates from Coventry today.
